Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and Gerald Ford voice support for statehood and urge Puerto Rico residents to vote in favor of it during the 1993 plebiscite.
Every U.S. president from Harry Truman to Donald Trump has stated that Puerto Rico should have the political status preferred by its people. In 2017, 97 percent of Puerto Ricans voted in favor of statehood. Other conservative groups and leaders who have spoken out on behalf of statehood include:
