Democrats are plotting to make Hurricane Maria into President Trump’s own Hurricane Katrina. Senate Democrat leader Chuck Schumer and his colleagues want to make the Puerto Rico natural disaster an even bigger political disaster, and the media are piling on. The storm of criticism is hurting the president’s approval rating in Florida, and especially among Puerto Ricans residing in the Interstate 4 Corridor, even though Puerto Rico’s elected officials have generally praised his administration’s relief effort.
Donald Trump became president in large part because of his brash style, which laid waste to the political correctness and calculations of both Republican and Democrat establishments. Those instincts would serve him well again if he were to outflank Democrats by giving full-throated support to something they refuse: statehood for Puerto Rico.
